I’ve been to ground for a little while for a funeral and also an engagement (otherwise known as a whirlwind of emotion from all sides). Now Hurricane Sandy has arrived in Brooklyn, and my partner and I are hunkered down trying to squeeze the last little bits of internet access out of our computers before we lose power. If you’re in the same boat, here are some links! If you’re not in the path of the hurricane, hopefully these will prove a pleasant diversion for a Monday afternoon.
- Here’s an oldie but goodie from the Hairpin’s Scandals of Classic Hollywood series about Marlene Dietrich, including some really interesting thoughts about her gender presentation, as well as this gorgeous photo:
If you’re into that sort of thing, the entire “Scandals” collection is detailed, painstakingly researched, and fascinating.
- Boygowns is a new tumblr that’s getting a lot of traffic. Their goal is “To create beautiful, frilly, lacey, poofy gowns with ATTACHED binders,” and they’ve just put out a call to their community for binder donations to turn their ideas into realities.
- These men’s shoes from 1860 are a neat example of how motifs and shapes for genders change over time.
- The Russian DJ and model Pavel Patel is known for his gender-bending accessorizing, and I personally find his blend of styles fantastic. (Note: all of the links to his blog here are relatively SFW, but his Tumblr as a whole is very much NOT safe for work.) His photos show a deliberate, agressive and very playful attitude toward gendered styles. (Click on the photos from links through to full SFW posts.)
That’s all for now. I’m going back to hiding under my blanket and hoarding my Internet access. Stay safe!
